Spending a few days with Jorge in Mexico paved the way for multiple ministry opportunities for us as well as the chance to see Jorge in action. It was a wonderful time for us.
I had the opportunity to share in a marriage conference the first night we were in Mexico (Tuesday). It took place at Jorge's church in Zorillo. My topic for the evening was about how important it is to develop a solid, loving friendship with your spouse. It seemed to have a good impact on the couples who were in attendance.
On Wednesday night I had the opportunity to watch Jorge at work as he led a church service for many local migrant worker families. His sermon was on the importance of living for Christ and living like Christ. From what I could grasp of the sermon (with my limited understanding of Spanish), it was a powerful message. Just following along with the verses that he shared was convicting for me personally.
At the same time Wednesday night, Breann had the opportunity to drive Maty into Ensenada. They had a wonderful time together. It was a chance for both of them to stretch their language skills. Thankfully, the bond of the Spirit bridges all language barriers. They both were able to pour out their hearts and understand each other. God is good!
On Thursday, I was able to go with Jorge to the local Bible school where he teaches a class each week. He allowed me to share with his students. All of them are training to become pastors, evangelists, or missionaries, so I took advantage of the opportunity to speak with them about some of my missions experiences. I also talked with them about the joys and the hardships of devoting one's life to serving Christ in this way. They seemed very receptive to the message. It was exciting for me to be able to see a good size group of future Christian leaders in Mexico.
Thursday night we had an incredible experience. We attended church in Zorillo but we had no translator for the service, so Jorge mentioned that I would not be speaking. However, the Holy Spirit had other plans. Midway through the service, Jorge felt led to ask me to come and share, even without translation. It was an incredible time of seeing what God can do in the hearts of His people. As I shared in English with people who normally understand little, if any, of the language, people's hearts were touched by my words. God apparently blessed many people with the ability to understand what the Spirit was saying through me far better than they should have been able to. Jorge said said that it was by far the easiest and best he had ever understood my speaking. We serve a mighty God who can do amazing things! What a wonderful opportunity and such a blessing it was for us. God is good. He can do such incredible things when we are willing and open to being used by Him.
The main desire we had in going to Mexico to serve Jorge and serve with him was to bring encouragement to him. You know that our heart is to bring words of encouragement to our partners around the world in the pattern of Barnabas in the book of Acts. This aspect of our ministry is most definitely our favorite. What a blessing it is to us to be hands and feet to them and bring God's reminders of fellow believers praying for them. We have gained new members into our family by the relationships we forged with Jorge and Maty. What precious people!
All throughout our time with Jorge and Maty, we also spent quite a bit of time in the migrant worker villages. It was an incredible chance to get to know some of the people that Jorge has been ministering to for years now. What an incredible ministry is going on in Mexico! Jorge's deep passion and love for the lost are astounding and convicting! He is a powerful preacher open and willing to serve the Lord in whatever way He calls him to. God is using Jorge in mighty ways!
